Every morning, before I take one step out of bed, I start my day with a simple ritual: I keep my eyes closed, take a few deep breaths, and express gratitude for the day or listen to a daily devotional on YouTube. I might even read a devotional from Iyanla Vanzant's book, too. Some way, somehow, I am going to thank the universe for the opportunities the day will bring, bless the challenges I'll face, and set a positive intention for the hours to come. This quiet moment of gratitude has become a cornerstone of my morning, grounding me and setting a tone of purpose and clarity.
One day, as I went through this ritual, I had an epiphany. Just as these moments of gratitude prepared me mentally and emotionally for the day, I realized that the same practice could be applied to how I approached my personal brand. My personal brand, much like my day, needed to be nurtured with intention, gratitude, and a clear vision.
The Problem: Going Through the Motions Without Meaning
For a long time, I’d been going through the motions with my personal brand. I have the experience, the skills, and the passion, but something, up until recently, has felt off. My brand was present, but it wasn’t thriving. It didn’t reflect the depth of who I was or the values that guided my life and work. It was as though I was living my professional life on autopilot, without fully engaging with what made me unique.
This realization hit me hard, especially because I know firsthand the importance of mental health professionals and the profound impact they have on people's lives. I’ve been deeply helped by mental health professionals throughout my journey, and it’s because of them that I’m committed to giving back in the best way I know how: by helping them build brands that resonate with their core values and connect with those who need their help the most.
The Intentional Personal Branding Plan: Infusing My Brand with Gratitude and Purpose
Inspired by this realization, I decided to take the same mindful approach to my brand that I took with my morning ritual. I started by reflecting on what I was truly grateful for in my personal and professional life. I thought about the people, employers, and clients who trusted me, the opportunities that had come my way, and the unique gifts and insights I brought to the table. This reflection wasn’t just about feeling thankful; it was about identifying the core values that I wanted my brand to represent.
For mental health professionals, these core values are the bedrock of their practice. They guide how they interact with clients, how they present themselves to the world, and ultimately, how they make a difference in the lives of others. I knew that if my brand wasn’t aligned with these values, it wouldn’t resonate authentically with the people I wanted to serve.
Next, I set clear intentions for my brand, just as I did for my day. What did I want to achieve? How did I want my brand to make others feel? How could I use my brand to make a positive impact? These questions guided me as I began to reshape my brand with purpose and clarity.
The Execution: Blessing My Brand with Care and Consistency
With my values and intentions in mind, I started to take action. First, I'm starting by revisiting my online presence—my website, social media, and the content I've shared. Were they aligned with the gratitude and purpose I felt each morning? Did they reflect the depth of my passion and the unique perspective I offered? In some areas, the answer was yes, but in others, I realized that my brand needed a refresh.
For mental health professionals, their messaging must resonate on a deeper level. It’s not just about what they offer; it’s about who they are and how they can help. I’m beginning with small, meaningful changes. I will be updating more of my messaging to ensure it is clear, consistent, and infused with the values I want to convey. I've refreshed the visuals on my website, choosing colors and images that felt unique to me but welcoming, just as I wanted my brand to be. And now, I’m sharing content that isn’t just informative but also reflective of the values I hold dear.
The Result: A Brand Aligned with Purpose and Gratitude
The transformation has been profound. Just as my morning ritual of gratitudes set a positive tone for my day, these intentional changes brought new energy and alignment to my brand. I connect with more people who value the same things I do and who appreciate the care and thoughtfulness I put into my work and life.
But the most significant change is how I feel. By aligning my personal brand with my values and expressing gratitude through my personal and professional life, I feel more connected to my work than ever before. My brand is evolving to be more than just a professional tool; it is becoming a true reflection of who I am and the impact I want to make in the world.
The Moral: Gratitude is the Foundation of a Strong Brand
What I learned from this experience is that gratitude isn’t just a nice way to start the day—it’s a powerful tool for building a personal brand that resonates with others and reflects your true self. As mental health professionals, your brand must be built on a foundation of authenticity, empathy, and trust. By approaching your brand with the same care and intention that you bring to your morning rituals, you can create something that not only attracts the right opportunities but also feels deeply aligned with who you are.
If you feel like your brand is lacking purpose or alignment, it might be time to infuse it with gratitude. Take a moment to reflect on what you’re thankful for, set clear intentions, and watch how these small shifts can transform your brand.
